Rowing Club Goes Yellow

June is national hospice awareness month and our local hospice, Thames Valley Hospice, has been encouraging local groups to join in their fund-raising efforts. Maidenhead Rowing Club decided to go yellow for the day and in the process raised more than £1000. The money was raised from sunflower, t-shirt and raffle ticket sales as well as race entry fees and breakfast profits.
Maidenhead Rowing Club was inspired to raise money for the hospice after losing one of its members to cancer, Jennifer Foran, in February of this year. Jennifer was an active member of Maidenhead Rowing Club for many years as a rower and a cox. The Thames Valley Hospice cared for Jennifer in her final weeks. Her family and friends were impressed by the competence, care and compassion that the hospice staffed showed her. They made a huge difference to the quality of her life.
To raise money for the hospice, Maidenhead Rowing Club went yellow for the day. Regular training proceeded as usual, but all rowers were wearing yellow as well as a Thames Valley Hospice Sunflower. “Go Yellow” T-shirts were bought by members of Maidenhead Rowing Club and because of the generosity of Mr Stuart King, D.M. Screenprint and YELL.com, all monies raised by the sale will be going to Thames Valley Hospice.
In addition to wearing a sunny colours on a rainy day, members of the rowing club competed in “play-boat” races. Many members chose to take part in the short course head to head racing. The winning time was achieved by David Jones, a gold medal sculler at the National Schools Regatta. He wins a goody bag supplied byYELL.com.
Despite the rain a fun day was had by all and most importantly a large sum of money was raised for the Thames Valley Hospice. The Hospice depends on charitable donatations to enable them to continue the high standard of care that they offer to those that need it. We want to help them continue this work. As one of the organisers of this event I would like to thank all at Maidenhead Rowing Club for getting involved and helping to raise a significant amount of money for the hospice. I would also like to say thank you to the two individual who each donated large cheques.
I would also encourage other clubs and associations to see what they can do to help the Thames Valley Hospice. We had a lot of fun doing this, and so can your club. If you would like to find out more about helping the Thames Valley Hospice, please contact their community fund-raising co-ordinator, Bronwin Cranfield on 01753 842121. You can help make a difference…
