Junior Learn To Row

Want to Learn to Row?

At Maidenhead Rowing Club, we offer a Junior Learn to Row course for young athletes from age 11 (school year 7) who have never rowed before but are eager to learn. This course is a perfect introduction to the sport, helping participants gain confidence on the water before deciding whether to join the club.

Learn to Row Overview

In this course, we will teach you the fundamentals of sculling (using an oar in each hand) to a competent level in stable boats. You will also have the chance to experience various types of boats, including:

  • Single sculls (1x)
  • Double sculls (2x)
  • Quadruple sculls (4x)
  • Octuple sculls (8x)

(Boat types and availability depend on river conditions.)

Entry Criteria

Our intake typically focuses on boys and girls in Year 7 at school, but we also try to accommodate older juniors when space allows. When space is limited, we apply the following selection criteria:

  • Plus points for children who are siblings or offspring of existing club members
  • Negative points for children attending (or planning to attend) a rowing school
  • Distance from the club may also be considered, with preference given to those living nearby.

How to Apply

To apply for the Junior Learn to Row course, please email us at junior-membership@maidenheadrc.org.uk.

Due to high demand and limited spaces, we hold an assessment day in the spring to select the most suitable candidates. Those on the waiting list will be contacted first when new course dates are announced.

Post Learn to Row: What’s Next?

After successfully completing the Learn to Row course, juniors have the option to join the beginner's squad, which starts in September. We have also hosted summer camps during the school holidays, which have been extremely popular.

Course Schedule

  • Duration: The course consists of 6 sessions, each lasting 2 hours.
  • Timing: The sessions are held over weekends during the spring and early summer, providing a chance to refine your technique before the more challenging autumn and winter water conditions.

Safety First

Please note that rowing is a physically demanding sport. Each session will involve lifting and carrying boats. For safety reasons, participants must be able to swim at least 50 meters in light clothing. Prior to starting the course, we conduct a capsize drill and a swim test.
