Since Eton Dorney hosted the rowing for the London 2012 Olympics, Maidenhead has seen the popularity of junior rowing increase substantially. An
ex-Maidenhead Junior, Rob Williams, took home a Silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics, and another former Junior, Jack Beaumont, was a Silver medalist in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The club has long-standing success within the Junior sector, with appearances at local, national and international events.
The club aims to offer opportunities for those coming to the sport for the first time: Junior "Learn to Row" courses take place in the Spring. Having completed the course, juniors may then move into the J13 group. From there, the progression is to the J14-15 and then J16-18 squads.
Due to being a water sport, safety is paramount and all juniors need to demonstrate their ability to swim 50 metres in light clothing, and be taught the drill in the event of capsizing a boat. Until this has been done, no juniors can be offered membership to the club.
The club operates a waiting list, in order to manage this effectively: juniors who show real potential at the sport may be integrated into one of the Junior squads at an earlier opportunity.
We believe everyone should have the opportunity to row if they want to do so, should you find that you are unable to afford membership due to your economic circumstances, you can apply to the committee for support. Each case is considered on its merits.
Our Code of Conduct for Junior Rowers can be read here.
